3D DEM Analysis of Particle Breakage Effect on Direct Shear Tests of Coarse Sand

This paper explores the effect of particle breakage on mechanical behavior coarse sand through 3D Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations direct shear tests (DST). The objective is to gain insights into macro- and micro-mechanical behaviors crushable sand, with a particular focus stress–strain relationship, volumetric deformation, evolution grain crushing. involve comparison between non-crushable models, where particles are implemented in zone DST subjected different high normal stresses. findings indicate that experience partial crushing at peak stress, further leading production finer shearing plane during critical state. migration these under pressure gravity generates their accumulation predominantly lower section simulation box. Importantly, presence induces decrease stress an increase strain contractive instead dilation, which gradually stabilizes deformation higher
